Yes that’s right the current Civic Si weights OVER 3000lbs. All hope is lost, Honda officially doesn’t care about making light weight simple cars. Never again will we see a 22oolb naturally aspirated fun box with a spartan interior.

Also the new Type R is ugly. Like not EP3 ugly where it’s kinda just odd, and to round, no like full blown TRD Celica ugly. Freaking ricer ass, WRX STI look a like garbage. With 20" wheels...no just no. Who the hell wants to pay for 20" low profile tires? Not the target demographic for the Honda Civic that’s for damn sure.

We’re heading for a second Malaise era. Weight is up in the name of “Safety”. Horsepower is up to carry that weight.

I’m not saying we’ll see 150 hp 5 liter V8s again but something awful is going to happen.

It’s def not the safety. It’s the accessories and doodads. And the power is just marketing nonsense, because everybody thinks they need a car that can do 0-60 in six seconds, even though that’s sort of insanely unnecessary in real world driving.

A Mirage barely weighs 2000lbs, a Honda fit 2,500. A compact of comparable size in the 80s weighed maybe 50-100lbs. less and had half as much horsepower.

The civic is dead in all but name. If you’re looking for a small, light, Honda, just look to the Fit.

The Civic is bigger and 300lbs heavier than a 97 Accord. Cars have A and C pillars you can’t see around, but people don’t car because they have Bluetooth and a back up camera, and “smart” cruise control. Alsl the presidential nominees are two or three people you wouldn’t trust to watch your kids for a weekend.

Awful things ARE happening.

That is bad. The 1980s econobox (which seats 4 tallish adults comfortably) I bought last week weighs litterally half. Sure safety/comfort/speed aren’t comparable, but the Civic (a Civic!) is literally twice as heavy. That’s absurd.

And 90% of people do not use the full power their car has, ever. The other nigt I was fallowing a newer Charger R/T on a twisty road, they were going 50 in a 55. Worst part was when a small passing zone did pop up thy also sped up.

Point is even if the car can go 0-60 in 7 seconds the owner is more likely to want to do it 15 seconds with one toe on the gas pedal.

I hope you’re wrong. However the fit is nice, as a responsible adult with a child, I “never” drive in a “reckless” manor. So things like ease of entry, and cargo space matter more, and the Fit is great for both of those.

The funniest thing is my 2010 Fit has less ground clearance than my 91 Civic did, even though it is overall 8 inches taller.

Time and time again, the same complaint comes up. Blame the NHTSA for all the SAFETY essentials, like airbags and thicker a-pillars and blunt front ends.

Also I’d like to point out that engines have become more powerful as a result.

Here’s one that, the base model is 2018 lbs with a manual, meets safety regulations, is dirt cheap, and is better equipped than a fully loaded small hatch 20 years ago. One trim up has all the convenience features you’d want, and is 2040 lbs with a manual.

Cars of today are improved in pretty much every way. The current Corolla is built to same standards as a first gen LS400 for example. We are not moving backwards, rather we are living in the golden age of the car, and we will continue to do so if this keeps up. The latest Civic Si is almost certainly going to be a better ‘car’ than its predecessors due to the evolution of technology.

That being said, I think there’s something fundamental that’s lost in modern cars, which is essential for ‘driving pleasure’ - the direct connection between the steering wheel and the road. You just don’t have that in modern ‘normal’ cars, you have to spend huge sums for a sports car or super car to get you that same sense of connection. Even a GT86 or MX-5 costs a small fortune.

Cars of today are always going to be ‘better’, no questions there. Just not sure if they’ll always be my ‘favourite’.

I was in a t-bone collision in my 2002 Miata. If the driver had hit me more towards the door (I was hit in the nose, directly in front of the door hinge, I had to climb over the door to get out), I would have been dead or gravely injured. If I had been hit more towards the front, I would have spun into a post with the passenger door taking the brunt of the impact, and my passenger would have been dead or gravely injured.

In an ND, a door t-bone at 45mph would probably have injured me, but I would’ve lived.

Honda has been doing this for a while. I know I’m late to reply.

The accord used to be in the civics market until it upsized, and the Civic used to be in the Fits market. They just keep upsizing.

The new HR-V is approx the size of the First-Gen CR-V.

They upsize and then add in a new model to replace.

It wont be long till the Civic goes Mid-size, accord Full-size, Fit goes Compact and then theres a new subcompact.
